The Solid Waste & Recycling Main Facility includes the Main Office, yard waste disposal, tire disposal, mulch sales, Household Hazardous waste events, and additional events.

We are located 6 miles west of Pittsboro. From Hwy 64 turn onto Renaissance Drive. County Services Road will be the first (and only) right turn. The Main Facility is the first building on your right after the turn.


Monday to Friday, 7:00 am - 4:00 pm.
Note: The scales close at 3:30 pm. For any item requiring use of the scales, you must be here by 3:30 pm.

Events at the Main Facility

There are numerous events offered throughout the year at the Main Facility. Visit our Events at the Main Facility page for details. 

Items Accepted at the Main Facility

Please note that we cannot guarantee we will have someone to help you unload any large items at the Main Facility. So if you need help unloading you will need to bring someone with you to help.

Batteries- Household and vehicle batteries. Do NOT tape batteries yourself. Bring to the Main Office building.

Cooking Oil

Electronics- Electronics of any size or weight from residents only. Learn more about what is and is not accepted in our Electronics Recycling program.

Fire Extinguishers- Bring to the Main Office building.

Fluorescent Lightbulbs- 2 foot and 4 foot tube fluorescent lightbulbs, small LED bulbs, compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFLs, or the curly kind)   

Inert Debris: Brick, concrete, rock, clean dirt/soil/sand. No painted brick or concrete. No mixed/other construction & demolition debris. $20 per ton, $2 minimum charge; must be weighed on scale.

Pesticide Containers- Must be triple-rinsed. Come into the Main Office building to receive instructions. 

Recycling for Residents- Free recycling is available to residents (no decal required). You will have to off-load all the material by hand into various containers. Each container has a sign, but if you are not sure where something goes please come to the Main Office building and ask. Learn about what is and is not accepted in our Recycling program.

Recycling for Businesses- Free recycling is available to businesses. You will have to off-load all the material by hand into various containers. Each container has a sign, but if you are not sure where something goes please come to the Main Office building and ask. 

If you have a large load of recycling you may be able to unload it onto our Recycling Station tipping floor. You must call prior to arriving at the Main Facility to see about availability though. Learn about what is and is not accepted in our Recycling program.

Scrap Metal & Appliances

Styrofoam- Clean WHITE Styrofoam packaging and food containers including foam cups, plates, take-out containers, and egg cartons. Food containers must be free of food and rinsed. No packaging peanuts. If you have a lot please put the Styrofoam in a plastic bag. Bring it to the Main Office building.

Tanks- Helium, propane, Coleman, oxygen, etc. Bring to the Main Office building.

Tires- Must be weighed on scale and counted. Must be off the rim. No limit on size or quantity. Tires will need to be hand-loaded into a tractor trailer and must be stacked properly. Please call ahead if you have more than 100 to ensure there is space available. Learn more about tire disposal.

If you have more than 5 tires to dispose of you will have to complete a Scrap Tire Certification Form. You can download the Scrap Tire Certification Form and bring it with you to save time.

If you have a large amount and wish to take them directly to Central Carolina Tire Disposal (CCTD) located at 1616 McKoy Town Road, Cameron NC. You must notify the Main Office before going to CCTD and complete the Scrap Tire Certification Form.

Yard Waste- Leaves, trees, limbs, shrubs, stumps, grass clippings, unpainted/untreated wood, and pallets. Learn more about yard waste disposal$20 per ton, $2 minimum charge; must be weighed on scale.

Items NOT Accepted at the Main Facility

The Main Facility does NOT accept trash of any type. The Chatham County municipal solid waste landfill closed in 1993. All trash is taken to a landfill or transfer station, where it is ultimately disposed of in a landfill.

Trash from a household in Chatham County can go to a Collection Center, if the resident has a current decal.

Businesses are not allowed to use any of the Collection Centers. Businesses are defined as any income-generating endeavor, which includes builders, contractors, developers, rental properties, farms, livestock, home businesses, etc. All business waste must go to a transfer station or landfill for disposal or contract with a  for service.
