We are located 6 miles west of Pittsboro. From Hwy 64 turn onto Renaissance Drive. County Services Road will be the first (and only) right turn. The Main Facility is the first building on your right after the turn.

No Trash Accepted

The Chatham County municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill closed in 1993. All waste is sent out of county to a regional landfill. The Main Facility can only accept recyclables and special materials listed below.

Trash from a household in Chatham County can go to a Collection Center, if the resident has a current decal.

Business trash CANNOT go the the Collection Centers. Businesses can take trash to a transfer station or landfill

Accepted Items

FREE RECYCLING is available to residents (no decal required) and businesses. You will have to off-load all the material by hand into various containers. Each container has a sign, but if you are not sure where something goes please come to the office and ask. We do not have any place for trash.

Notice to Businesses wanting to Recycle at the Main Facility- If you have a large load of Mixed Recycling you may be able to unload it onto our Recycling Station tipping floor. However, you must call prior to arriving at the Main Facility to see about availability.

  • Mixed Paper- including office paper, mail, paperboard like tissue and cereal boxes, paper towel rolls, and milk/juice/soup cartons 

  • Corrugated Cardboard- please flatten

  • Newspapers & inserts

  • Aluminum Cans- beverage cans only

  • Steel Cans- food cans & pets cans only

  • Plastic Bottles, Tubs, Jugs, and Jars

  • Glass Bottles and Jars

  • Scrap Metal & Appliances

  • Tires: *Must be weighed on scale and counted* Must be off the rim. No limit on size or quantity. Please call ahead with a large quantity.

  • Batteries: household and vehicle batteries

  • Cooking Oil

  • Electronics of any size or weight

  • Helium Tanks, Propane Tanks, and Fire Extinguishers

  • Pesticide Containers: *Must be triple-rinsed*

  • Yard Debris *$20 per ton, $2 minimum charge; must be weighed on scale*
    Leaves, trees, limbs, shrubs, stumps, non-painted/non-treated lumber and pallets

  • Inert Debris *$20 per ton, $2 minimum charge; must be weighed on scale*
    Brick, concrete, rock, clean dirt/soil/sand. No painted brick or concrete. No mixed/other construction & demolition debris.
