Composting, Mulch, & Yard Waste

These programs are offered at the Main Facility located at 28 County Services Road, Pittsboro NC. The Main Facility is off of Highway 64, about six miles west of Pittsboro. Turn onto Renaissance Drive. 

Due to the NC Stay-at-Home Order, there have been changes made to our Yard Waste and Mulch Sales. Learn more details here.  

Yard Waste Recycling

We can accept yard waste at our Main Solid Waste & Recycling Facility, Monday-Friday from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. The charge to dispose of yard waste is $20/ton, with a $2 minimum.  The following is a list of items that we can and cannot take in the yard waste.

Yard waste disposal for residents has been suspended through at least April 30. Commercial businesses must have an account. Learn more here.

Accepted in Yard Waste:
Grass clippings
Stumps- with no excess dirt
Wood- untreated, unpainted
Wood pallets- untreated, unpainted
*Bamboo needs to be separated for disposal

               NOT Accepted in Yard Waste:
Biodegradable yard bags
Treated or painted wood
Plastic bags
Excessive dirt

Mulch Sales

Mulch sales will begin Saturday, March 7. Mulch sales take place Saturdays from 7:30 am to Noon at 28 County Services Road Pittsboro. Mulch sales have been cancelled through April 30, due to the NC Stay-at-Home order. We hope to resume mulch sales in May. Check back here for updates.

We load, you haul. Mulch is $5 per scoop; each scoop is about one cubic yard. We will load large trailers and dump trucks only with a large scoop for $10 per scoop. 

All loads of mulch MUST be secured. Learn more about securing your load.

If there is mulch available we plan to have sales on Wednesdays in the summer as well. Check back here for more details in May. 

ATTENTION: Chatham County is not responsible for damage caused by the mulch
or for any damage that you or your property may suffer from loading of mulch.

Compost Bins for Sale


Make your own free compost and have healthier soil, diverting up to 30% of your household garbage. We sell backyard composters (like the one pictured on the right) for $45 each. Backyard compost bins can be purchased at the Main Solid Waste & Recycling Facility, Monday-Friday from 7 am to 4 pm. Pictured on the right.

We also sell kitchen collectors to put on your counter to collect your food in until you take it out to the compost bin. They are $5 each and pictured below.
