From the "Deaths" column, The Raleigh Register, 3/6/1840: "At this residence, in Chatham County, on the 2d. of February, in the 65th year of his age, Edward Rives, Esq. In him the citizens of Chatham have lost one of their best, most useful and influential citizens. Such was his devotion to justice and probity, that he was the name of the "honest man" and impartial magistrate; while his generous and liberal soul marked him for the most confiding and enduring friendship."
