Tenure Notables



Sheriff Don Whitt, who started his career with the sheriff’s office in 1965, stated that even then the deputies only got every 5th weekend off. The deputies and the Sheriff had to provide their own cars and received a fixed amount per month as compensation regardless of miles driven. The deputies had families and with their car being used for county business, it generally required them to own a second car for family use.

Sheriff Whitt started Crime Stoppers at the Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Whitt was a strong supporter of DARE(Drug Awareness Resistance Education) program in the schools. 

Sheriff Whitt started the CARE(Child Abuse Resistance Education) in the elementary schools.

Sheriff Whitt retired in November 2000.


Military Experience


Sheriff Whitt served 6 years in the US Navy.  He obtained the rank of 3rd class Yeoman.


Other Offices


Sheriff Whitt served as Deputy Sheriff/Detective/Chief Deputy for 25 years.  He is a 32nd degree Mason.  Sheriff Whitt is a Past Master of Columbus Lodge 102 in Pittsboro.  He also particaptes in the Chatham County Shrine and is a Past President of the Pittsboro Kiwanis Club.
