Collection Centers Closed for Memorial Day
The Chatham County Solid Waste & Recycling division has decided to add Memorial Day and Labor Day to the Collection Center holiday schedule. Starting this year, all 12 Collection Centers will be closed for Memorial Day, Monday, May 27.
“Most of the businesses that our drivers haul the trash and recycling to are closed on Memorial Day and Labor Day,” says Kevin Lindley, Environmental Quality Director. “This causes the drivers to be behind the rest of the week as they work to get all the containers they would normally pull on a Monday. Plus, it causes centers to get full and stay full longer.”
In addition to Memorial Day and Labor Day, the Collection Centers are closed on the following holidays each year: New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and close at 2 pm on Christmas Eve.
Contact the Main Office at 919-542-5516 for additional updates.
Collection Center Construction Updates
Construction work will continue over the next four weeks at the Bennett, Goldston, and Harpers Crossroads Collection Centers. The centers will remain open, but residents should expect delays or different traffic patterns. They will be paving the centers on Wednesdays, when the centers are already closed.
The paving work with the Siler City and Bonlee Collection Centers is completed.
Be sure to check here or contact the Main Office at 919-542-5516 for additional updates.

Solid Waste & Recycling Calendar:
The Chatham County Solid Waste & Recycling Division works to promote environmentally sound activities and to provide a clean, safe and efficient program for the management, collection, reduction, recycling and disposal of solid waste.
The Chatham County Solid Waste & Recycling Division is an Enterprise Fund, meaning it relies on fees for its funding. The division receives no general fund tax dollars. County solid waste fees are billed on property tax statements for all homeowners in the unincorporated areas of Chatham County. These fees are tied to the costs of operating the centers and hauling and disposing of the waste collected at the centers. Click for more on funding.

The Solid Waste & Recycling Division manages approximately one-third of the solid waste generated in Chatham County. The remaining two-thirds is handled under contract by the towns of Pittsboro, Goldston and Siler City or by private haulers who offer commercial and residential services.
Chatham County has not operated a Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) landfill since October 1993. All solid waste that is not recycled is hauled to privately-owned transfer stations. We currently pay the transfer stations a per ton tipping fee, and they haul the trash to a privately-owned landfill in Sampson County.
