Changes to Chatham County Electronics Recycling Program

Post Date:07/30/2020 8:43 AM

Starting August 1, 2020, changes will be made to the Chatham County Solid Waste & Recycling electronics recycling program. Residents with a current Collection Center decal will be able to bring electronics of any size and weight from their household to the Bonlee, Cole Park, and Pittsboro Collection Centers. The other nine Collection Centers will still only be able to accept televisions smaller than 25 inches and electronics less than 50 pounds.

Additionally, residents without a current decal who bring electronics to the Main Facility for disposal will be charged for some electronics. There will be a charge of $5.00 per television, monitor, desktop computer, laptop computer, printer, scanner, copier, and fax machine. There will be no charge for smaller electronics accepted in the recycling program, such as cell phones, routers, radios, and hard drives.

Results of Chatham County’s 2019 Biennial Citizen Satisfaction survey showed that residents wanted more options to dispose of large electronics. “These changes to our electronics recycling program will make recycling electronics more convenient for residents of Chatham County,” said Kevin Lindley, Environmental Quality Director. “Currently, residents have to bring large electronics to our Main Facility, which is only open weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Now residents with a current decal will be able to bring electronics to three of our Collection Centers, which have more varied hours of operation.”

Starting August 1, small businesses and non-profits can also now bring electronic items to the Main Facility for recycling and will be charged the same rates as residents without a decal – $5.00 for larger items and no charge for smaller items. Electronics from large businesses will not be accepted. Chatham County Solid Waste & Recycling reserves the right to determine access to the electronics recycling program.
