Chatham County Invites Applicants for Several Advisory Committees

Chatham County will have several upcoming vacancies on its advisory committees, which typically happens this time of year. Service on committees is a great way for interested residents to have a voice on issues of interest. The deadline to submit applications to serve is Friday, May 24, 2019 at 5 PM.

Some of the vacancies are assigned to specific areas of the county identified by county commissioner election districts. Click here to view a map of commissioner districts. You also can look up your commissioner district for your address at the NC State Board of Elections website

Affordable Housing Advisory Committee: This committee makes recommendations to the Board of Commissioners on procedures and policies related to affordable housing. They have been focused on implementing the Affordable Rental Housing Strategy Toolbox and developing new strategies on affordable home ownership and transitional housing.

The committee currently meets the first Thursday of the month, usually at the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center in Pittsboro.

The committee has three upcoming vacancies. One seat is assigned to Commissioner District 4, with a term ending June 30, 2021. Another is assigned to Commissioner District 5, with the term ending June 30, 2022. An at-large seat also is open, with an initial term ending June 30, 2020.

Environmental Review Advisory Committee: This committee serves as the Watershed Review Board and also advises the Board of Commissioners on environmental policy and related county ordinances, including the watershed ordinance. It conducts special assigned projects and helps county staff review required state and federal environmental permits for projects in the county. The committee typically meets the second Thursday of the month at 6:30 PM, but this sometimes varies.

The committee has a total of three upcoming vacancies that are assigned to Commissioner District 1, District 3, and District 4, respectively. Those appointed would serve a full three-year term ending June 30, 2022.

Library Advisory Committee: The committee advises library staff on the operation of the county’s public libraries. Primary goals are representing and responding to current library needs and issues and promoting use of library services and programs by all residents. The committee meets quarterly and sometimes rotate to each of the three library locations. The dates and starting times vary.

The Library Advisory Committee has two upcoming vacancies, one assigned to County Commissioners District 5 and one is an at-large seat. Appointees would serve three years until June 30, 2022.

Recreation Advisory Committee: This committee advises the County Board of Commissioners and staff on recreation programs and county-owned recreation and park facilities. It will play a key role in implementing the recently adopted Parks & Recreation Comprehensive Master Plan. The committee typically meets six times a year on the third Wednesday of the month at 7 PM.

The committee has one upcoming vacancy assigned to Commissioner District 1. The appointee would serve until June 30, 3021.

Transportation Advisory Committee: This committee meets only as needed, usually in Pittsboro, to provide guidance to the Board of Commissioners on the County’s Comprehensive Transportation Plan for NC Department of Transportation. They also provide input on NCDOT’s transportation project prioritization within Chatham.

The committee has one upcoming vacancy assigned to County Commissioner District 2. The appointee would serve three years until June 30, 2022.
