Chatham County Department Leaders Help Spruce Up Eastern Senior Center

Post Date:10/05/2018 10:06 AM
Each year, Chatham County’s department leaders gather for a day of service and team-building activities as a way to give back to the community and get to know each other better. On October 3, the group provided a morning of service at the Eastern Chatham Senior Center in Pittsboro.

Dennis Streets, director of Chatham County Council on Aging, said the teams of county employees worked throughout the morning to spread mulch, paint the front porch railings, prime coat rocking chairs and apply a non-slip coating to a walking trail bridge.

“In just a few hours, the Eastern Center looked fresher. The new green color of the front railing got many compliments from visitors,” Streets said. The rocking chairs are still a work in progress.

Several renovations at the Western Senior Center in Siler City have also been completed, including the addition of covered front porches and new plantings. Both centers have had new audio-visual equipment installed for presentations and special events.

The county departmental teams shared mealtime with older residents having lunch at the Eastern Center. Just before lunch, the Council on Aging’s Choral Group performed several gospel songs.

“This was a tremendous experience for our department heads to contribute to such an important program in Chatham,” said Interim County Manager Dan LaMontagne. “We learned a great deal about the services provided through the senior centers and how much they rely on volunteers.”

New department heads served as the team that planned the departmental service day, which ended with a tour of Carolina Tiger Rescue.

Streets noted that the Council on Aging has a wide range of volunteer opportunities. “Just a few examples include delivering meals to homes, making minor home repairs, teaching basic computer skills, helping with fundraising and maintaining bocce ball courts in Pittsboro.”
