Chatham Animal Shelter Closed in Advanced of the Hurricane

Chatham County Animal Services has announced that it has closed its animal shelter in Pittsboro, effective immediately, due to overcrowding and to allow staff to adequately prepare for Hurricane Florence.

Anyone who plans to ride out the hurricane at a county shelter, please know that Northwood High School in Pittsboro is the only shelter equipped for pets. It opens at 8 PM on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 8 PM. It has limited space for pets using a mobile kennel facility. Space is first come, first served.

If you bring a pet to the Northwood shelter, be sure to have pets on leash or in a crate when you arrive. Also, bring all supplies for the pet, including food, medications and other needs. You will be responsible for caring for your own pets.

Shelters opening on Wednesday at at 8 PM are: 

  • Northwood High School:310 Northwood High School Rd, Pittsboro, NC 27312
  • Chatham Middle School:2025 S 2nd Avenue Ext, Siler City, NC 27344 (no facilities for pets)
