IMPORTANT:  This page is for residences and businesses already connected to the Chatham County Water System and with a working meter installed, but needs to initiate water service.  If you need information on installing water or meters, click here.

Chatham County Utility is pleased to provide you with water service for your home or business.  Our friendly staff can help you with your water needs.  Chatham County does not service the water for the Town of  Siler City, The Town of Pittsboro nor Goldston Gulf Sanitary District. Click here for contact information on these water systems.

 Please read the following guidelines for establishing service!

HOMEOWNERS:

If you are the property owner, you will need to complete the following to establish service:

  1. Submit a Water Service application (click here to complete online service application) or access a PDF copy that you can save/print.
  2. Pay the deposit of $40, due at the time of application.  Service will not be initiated until deposit is paid.  If applying online or by fax, a member of our staff will contact you within an hour to verify receipt of application and take payment for the required fees over the phone with a credit card. 
  3. A copy of your unexpired picture ID must accompany this printed application if applying in person or by fax/email.  If you complete the online application, please complete Driver's License/ID # portion of the application to verify your identity.
  4. No services will be turned on without completion of these documents.
  5. You can apply in person at 964 East St (2nd Floor) or fax documents to 919-542-8282.  Please make sure copies and driver license are legible to view when faxing. 
     

RENTERS:

If you are a rental customer (you rent rather than own the property where you reside), you will need to complete the following to establish service:

  1. Submit a Water Service application (click here to complete online service application) or access a PDF copy that you can save/print. 
  2. Submit a copy of your Lease or rental agreement. Please only fax the front and the last page with signatures if the agreement is multiple pages.
  3. A copy of your unexpired picture ID must accompany this printed application if applying in person or by fax/email.  If you complete the online application, please complete Driver's License/ID # portion of the application to verify your identity.
  4. Pay the deposit of $80, due at the time of application.  Service will not be initiated until deposit is paid.  If applying online or by fax, a member of our staff will contact you within an hour to verify receipt of application and take payment for the required fees over the phone with a credit card.   
  5. No services will be turned on without these documents. 
  6. You can apply in person at 964 East St (2nd Floor) or fax documents to 919-542-8282. Please make sure copies and driver license are legible to view when faxing.

Stop Service

 

 

 

If you are moving or selling your property, you will need to have your service disconnected. Otherwise, you will still be liable for any water use, even if you are no longer living at or using the property.

 

All requests for termination should be in writing.  You can simply send an e-mail message (watershop@chathamnc.org), termination document by fax (919-542-8282), or letter by mail (PO Box 910, Pittsboro NC 27312).    To print a termination request form click here.  In your request please include the service address, the date you wish to terminate the account, and your forwarding address for your final bill and deposit refund.


Final Bill

Deposits will be refunded when services are disconnected and all bills paid.

Upon discontinuance of service for nonpayment of bills, the deposit will be applied by the County toward settlement of the account. Any balance will be refunded to the consumer, but if the deposit is not sufficient to cover the bill, the County may take action to collect the balance through standard debt collection methods.


Landlord Accounts

If you are a landlord and your tenant moves out and you want the water service to revert back to your name and address, please complete a landlord agreement.  A deposit will also be held on your account to avoid lapse in water service.  To obtain a landlord agreement, click here. Otherwise, the water will be terminated and a new application, along with a deposit, will be required for each reconnection of water service.

Deposits

All customers are required to pay a deposit.  We do not perform credit checks on utility customers.  Deposits can be paid at the Public Utilities office located at 964 East Street, Pittsboro or mail to:  Chatham County Utilities, P. O. Box 910, Pittsboro, NC 27312. Deposits must be received before service is initiated.  

*If you are transferring from one location to another, any current balances will need to be paid at the time of application. 

**Services are turned on within 2 business days after the application, documents, and the required deposit are received in the Utilities office.
