The Chatham County Public Health Department works to support the Chatham County Public Schools in providing quality health promotion and health education programs to Chatham County Schools’ staff, students, and families. Together with the School Health Advisory Council (SHAC), district and school staff, we work toward the CDC’s Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model. This model puts forth that in order for students to be whole- healthy, safe, challenged, supported and engaged- schools must not only be a space where children learn, but also a space for health and wellness. The WSCC model is an expansion and update of the Coordinated School Health (CSH) approach. This model emphasizes the relationship between educational attainment and health, and puts the child at the center of the system for all sectors to align and collaborate together around.

This model guides our work to recognize and coordinate the main aspects of school-based health promotion, from the physical environment to health services services to employee wellness programming. By strengthening and coordinating our efforts, we will create school environments that help students live healthier and achieve more.
