Chatham County and the Town of Cary have scheduled two opportunities for residents to review and comment on the current draft of a proposed Joint Land Use Plan for sections of eastern Chatham County.
The meetings are scheduled for:
- Wednesday, November 18—7-9 pm, North Chatham Elementary School, Multipurpose Room, located at 3380 Lystra Road, northeastern Chatham County
- Monday, November 30—2-4 pm, Bradford Hall, the community center for Carolina Preserve, located at 115 Allforth Place, Cary
If adopted by both boards, the Joint Land Use Plan would cover eastern sections of Chatham County, generally east of Jordan Lake and north of White Oak Creek to the Wake County line.
The main purpose of the meetings is to listen to comments and suggestions from residents, which will be used to further revise the proposed draft plan before the county or the town hold official public hearings in Spring 2010, according to Harold Weinbrecht, Jr., mayor of Cary, and George Lucier, chair of the Chatham County Board of Commissioners.
Both meetings will use an open house format, which allows residents to come and go anytime during the two-hour period. The current draft plan includes proposed land uses, densities and utility service areas. A map of the draft plan will be on display.
Planning staff will be available to answer questions and listen to concerns and suggestions. Attendees also can complete comment cards.
For those who can’t attend either open house, the draft plan is posted on the Chatham County website at: www.chathamnc.org/jointchathamcaryplan. The webpage includes handouts and questionnaires that will be distributed at the meeting. Written comments will be accepted through December 4, 2009.
It is important to emphasize that the proposed joint plan is not intended to promote further annexation by Cary into Chatham County, said Sally Kost, vice chair of the Board of Commissioners, who has served on a joint land use subcommittee comprised of town council and county commissioners. “The plan is designed to guide future development in that part of the county.”
Several community meetings have been held in both Chatham County and Cary over the past few years on the proposed joint plan. This extensive input has shaped the draft plan that is under consideration, Kost said.
