GENERAL INFORMATION ON OUR DEPARTMENT

MISSION: To provide all citizens with a variety of recreational opportunities through facilities and programs that are accessible, safe and well-maintained.

MAJOR SERVICES & PROGRAMS:  

• Manages county recreational and park facilities, including ballfields at Bynum and Southwest Community Park near Bear Creek
• Offers the following county-sponsored recreation programs: basketball for adults, boys and girls; fast-pitch softball for girls; adult softball; t-ball for girls and boys; youth track and field; adult volleyball; youth wrestling, youth tennis lessons, swimming lessons (ages 3 and up), youth karate (self-defense) classes, tumbling classes for tots, and youth cheerleading classes
• Supports programs managed by other organizations for youth football, soccer and baseball and for kayaking and canoeing;
• Partners with other organizations to develop walking/biking trails and river canoe trails;
• Sponsors special events, including Easter egg hunt and summer recreation camps at local schools; and
• Manages the Chatham Parks Foundation to raise funds for park facilities in the county.

COUNTY PARK LOCATIONS:

• Southwest Community Park, 15124 Highway 902, just south of Chatham Central High School
• Earl Thompson Park (ballfields), 173 Bynum Hill Road, Bynum. Heading north on 15-501 from Pittsboro, cross the Haw River and turn right on Durham-Eubanks Road to get to the ballfields.
• Northeast District Park, under construction on Big Woods Road
• Northwest District Park, located on Woody Store Road (formerly Camp Maranantha Springs. Periodically used for special events.
• American Tobacco Trail, northeast corner near Durham County, under construction
