Solid Waste & Recycling Calendar:
Mission:
The Chatham County Solid Waste & Recycling Division works to promote environmentally sound activities and to provide a clean, safe and efficient program for the management, collection, reduction, recycling and disposal of solid waste.
Funding:
The Chatham County Solid Waste & Recycling Division is an Enterprise Fund, meaning it relies on fees for its funding. The division receives no general fund tax dollars. County solid waste fees are billed on property tax statements for all homeowners in the unincorporated areas of Chatham County. These fees are tied to the costs of operating the centers and hauling and disposing of the waste collected at the centers. Click for more on funding.

Major Services:
The Solid Waste & Recycling Division manages approximately one-third of the solid waste generated in Chatham County. The remaining two-thirds is handled under contract by the towns of Pittsboro, Goldston and Siler City or by private haulers who offer commercial and residential services.
Chatham County has not operated a Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) landfill since October 1993. All solid waste that is not recycled is hauled to privately-owned transfer stations. We currently pay the transfer stations a per ton tipping fee, and they haul the trash to a privately-owned landfill in Sampson County.
