Commissioners Receive Draft Report on Natural Gas & Oil Development

Special Meeting Slated for June 13th

Post Date:06/08/2017 8:17 AM
A special meeting of the Chatham County Board of Commissioners is scheduled for 6 pm on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at the Agriculture & Conference Center in Pittsboro to receive a preliminary report related to county’s temporary moratorium on oil and gas development activity.

The county’s moratorium ordinance adopted in August 2015 required the county to contract with a consultant with expertise in oil and gas development activities to conduct a study of potential impacts, including how such development could affect Chatham County’s natural and social environments and economic benefits and costs.

Charles Yuill, associate professor in the Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design at West Virginia University, has conducted this research and will present the preliminary report on June 13.

Yuill has an extensive background in geologic studies, planning, and landscape architecture with over 30 years of work in the area of the environmental impacts of non-renewable energy. He has worked for governmental agencies, civic groups and industry.

Several county advisory committees will have members on hand to ask questions and provide feedback on the report. County residents also will have an opportunity to sign up onsite to speak or ask questions after Yuill’s presentation.

The report will be finalized based on feedback. The final draft report produced later this year will provide another opportunity for input from the public and the Board of Commissioners.
