Caregiver Accused of Patient Abuse & Neglect
The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office opened an investigation following allegations of abuse and neglect reported on July 15 by concerned staff members at a local assisted living facility. According to the report, a 92-year-old victim suffered significant injuries that resulted in bruising and swelling. Staff members at Chatham Ridge Assisted Living noticed the injuries and worked with the victim and law enforcement to gather information about how the injuries occurred. Further investigation and interviews indicated that another employee, Iantha Merritt Southerland, 63, of 504 S Merritt Mill Road, Chapel Hill, may have been responsible.
Southerland was arrested and charged with felony patient abuse and neglect as well as felony assault on the handicapped. She was given a written promise to appear in Chatham County District Court in Pittsboro on August 22.
