Family Member Accused of Defrauding Elderly Resident
On June 8, 2017, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office received notice from the Chatham County Department of Social Services reporting possible exploitation of an elder. The victim is a resident of an assisted living facility. A family member, Darryl Winslow Edwards, 52, of 395 Jack Bennett Road, Chapel Hill, had Power of Attorney and legal authority to access the victim’s financial accounts. However, investigators found Edwards had withdrawn cash as well as purchased groceries, fuel, and other expenses for his own benefit using the victim’s accounts.
Edwards is accused of defrauding the victim of more than $500.00 in less than six months. He is charged with felony financial card fraud and felony exploitation of an elder. Edwards is due to appear in Chatham County District Court in Pittsboro on May 21.
